"Genesis" spankings
by donny ini recently met a woman here at work (a contractor) and discovered she is an ex-jw.
eventually we got around to telling why each of us left the religion.
she said the main reason for her was not doctrines, but because she was tired of the physical and emotional abuse she received.

You make some valid points. The majority of people, of all cultures and all relgions, have been beating their children for millenia and see nothing wrong with it. So the WTBTS is no more culpable than any other religion in this regard, I agree. However, they are no less responsible either, in that they did nothing to stand out from other religions and teach a kinder and more loving way to raise children. The condoned the raising of children by fear and humilation right along side the others. When minority voices spoke out against the brutal treatment of children, they sided with the status quo. They are no worse, nor any better, but they do not stand out as beacons of light in this regard as you would expect from God's chosen people.
I think this could be used as a prime example of how people can actually evolve past the need for archaic religious teachings in all aspects of living their lives. Humanist values have already surpassed the world's religions in its advocacy of how to best treat our children, each other, and the planet. Why do we need to cling to the traditions of the past beyond their usefulness to us as a society?

Oompa, your comedic timing is non-existent and in its usual bad taste.
To force a young woman of sixteen (who at that age is fully sexually developed) to disrobe completely in front of her father and bend over and say that doesn't have any sexual overtones to it, is big time denial.
J.D.: You just can't imagine a parent getting anything sexual from their childen? The majority of sexually abused children are molested by their fathers, stepfathers and other relatives. That is common knowledge nowadays. Get real!

Life After JWs
by Uzzah ini wanted to share some very cool (in my opinion) news.
in two months i will have been gone from bethel for 14 years and attended my last meeting 11 years ago.
i spent 11 years at bethel sacrificing all of my 20's to the borg and finding myself at age 32 with no resume or real work experience.. it has been a tough haul with the majority of my energy going into building a career.

Congratulations Uzzah
Those of us who have struggled in mid-life to make up for years of wasted talent and lack of education know how difficult and hard-won it is to turn things around. It makes success all the sweeter when it comes!
You get my vote!

That's pretty funny. The lyrics are so pure and chaste and Jdub approved, but just at the end he loses it a bit and the real Prince sneaks out: "bite dat" and "grunt your hips".
Oh Prince, Prince, tsk tsk, you know you can't grunt a nice JW girl's hips until after she's worn the white veil and you've kissed her lips with the wedding kiss, not before!

I'm from BC and there has always been one Saturday morning bookstudy in every congregation I've attended since the 1980's. My father is still a PO and conducts the Saturday morning bookstudy in his house before service for years. When I visited a friend in Seatlle, they had Saturday morning bookstudy, coffee as a group and then service. I wonder if there are still Saturday groups now that the bookstudy for everyone is supposed to be at the Kingdom Hall?
As for the yoga, I used to do yoga myself in my home when I was pioneering, also in the 80's. No one ever said anything to me about it although I didn't advertise it heavily, my pioneer partner and a few of my friends saw my yoga book on coffee table. Wasn't a big deal. My sister, who is a JW goes to yoga class. Some don't approve, but it is not a big major deal here. The west coast of North America is much loser in what is acceptable, especially in California. The congregations tend to reflect the more casual attitudes to traditional morals and activities that is present on the west coast. The same is true in Canada. Many on the coast of BC are seen as "slackers" compared to the super dubs that pioneer back east and go to bethel.
